Splicing factor 3B subunit 1 (SF3B1) is the largest component of SF3b protein complex which is involved in the pre-mRNA splicing mechanism. Somatic mutations of SF3B1 were shown to be associated with aberrant splicing, producing abnormal transcripts that drive cancer development and/or prognosis. In this study, we focus on the relationship between SF3B1 and four types of cancer, namely myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and breast cancer (BC). For this purpose, we identified from the Pubmed library only articles which mentioned SF3B1 in connection with the investigated types of cancer for the period 2007 to 2018 to reveal how the connection has developed over time. We left out all published articles which mentioned SF3B1 in other contexts. We retrieved the target articles and investigated the association between SF3B1 and the mentioned four types of cancer. For this we utilized some of the publicly available databases to retrieve gene/variant/disease information related to SF3B1. We used the outcome to derive and analyze a variety of complex networks that reflect the correlation between the considered diseases and variants associated with SF3B1. The results achieved based on the analyzed articles and reported in this article illustrated that SF3B1 is associated with hematologic malignancies, such as MDS, AML, and CLL more than BC. We found that different gene networks may be required for investigating the impact of mutant splicing factors on cancer development based on the target cancer type. Additionally, based on the literature analyzed in this study, we highlighted and summarized what other researchers have reported as the set of genes and cellular pathways that are affected by aberrant splicing in cancerous cells

The concept of spectrum sensing has emerged as a fundamental solution to address the growing demand for accessing the limited resources of wireless communications networks. This paper introduces a straightforward yet efficient approach that incorporates multiple stages that are based on deep learning (DL) techniques to mitigate Radio Frequency (RF) impairments and estimate the transmitted signal using the time domain representation of received signal samples. The proposed method involves calculating the energies of the estimated transmitted signal samples and received signal samples and estimating the energy of the noise using these estimates. Subsequently, the received signal energy and the estimated noise energy, adjusted by a correction factor (k), are employed in binary hypothesis testing to determine the occupancy of the wireless channel under investigation. The proposed system demonstrates encouraging outcomes by effectively mitigating RF impairments, such as carrier frequency offset (CFO), phase offset, and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), to a considerable degree. As a result, it enables accurate estimation of the transmitted signal from the received signal, with 3.85% false alarm and 3.06% missed detection rates, underscoring the system’s capability to adaptively determine a decision threshold for energy detection.European Union’s H2020 Framework Programm

Management of cervical cancer during pregnancy

    Get PDF
WOS: 000373739200023PubMed ID: 26467977Cervical cancer (CC) is the most common gynaecological cancer during pregnancy. The rarity of the disease and lack of randomised control studies have prevented the establishment of treatment guidelines. The management of CC mainly follows the guidelines for the non-pregnant disease state, expert opinions and limited case reports. Although the management of CC diagnosed during pregnancy appears to be a significant dilemma for the patients and specialists, the prognosis of CC is not influenced by pregnancy. The treatment decision should be made collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team consisting of an obstetrician, gynaecologist, oncologist and paediatrician. The concerns of the patient should be taken into account

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) positioning is a challenging task indoors due to environmental constraints and the unpredictable behavior of signal propagation, even at a fixed location. The aim of this work is to develop deep learning-based approaches for indoor localization and tracking by utilizing Received Signal Strength (RSS). The study proposes Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), One and Two Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (1D CNN and 2D CNN), and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) deep networks architectures for WLAN indoor positioning based on the data obtained by actual RSS measurements from an existing WLAN infrastructure in a mobile user scenario. The results, using different types of deep architectures including MLP, CNNs, and LSTMs with existing WLAN algorithms, are presented. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) is used as the assessment criterion. The proposed LSTM Model 2 achieved a dynamic positioning RMSE error of 1.73 m, which outperforms probabilistic WLAN algorithms such as Memoryless Positioning (RMSE: 10.35 m) and Nonparametric Information (NI) filter with variable acceleration (RMSE: 5.2 m) under the same experiment environment.ECSEL Joint Undertaking ; European Union's H2020 Framework Programme (H2020/2014-2020) Grant ; National Authority TUBITA

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the treatment options and survival of uterine cervical cancer (UCC) patients who develop isolated pulmonary metastases (IPM) and to establish risk factors for IPM.Material and Methods: Data from patients diagnosed with UCC between June 1991 and January 2017 at the Gynecological Oncology Department, Tepecik Training and Research Hospital, were investigated. In total, 43 cases with IPM were evaluated retrospectively. Additionally, 172 control patients diagnosed with UCC without recurrence were matched according to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) 2009 stage when the tumor was diagnosed. They wereselected using a dependent random sampling method. Results: Of the 890 patients with UCC, 43 (4.8%) had IPM. The presence of lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) anda mid-corpuscular volume (MCV) < 80 fL were statistically significant prognostic factors for IPM development in UCC patientsaccording to univariate regression analyses, and the presence of LVSI, a hemoglobin level < 12 g/dL, and an MCV < 80 fLwere statistically significant according to the multivariate regression analyses. We were unable to assess the role of lymph node status (involvement or reactive) as a prognostic factor in the development of IPM, because only seven patients (16.2%) in the case group underwent lymph node dissection. Conclusions: IPM typically develops within the first 3 years after the diagnosis of UCC, and survival is generally poor. AnMCV < 80 fL and the presence of LVSI are significant risk factors for IPM development

Aim In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of MTHFR C677T and A1298C polymorphisms to homocysteine levels in patients with Parkinson's disease who were treated with levodopa and entekapone. Materials and Methods Plasma homocysteine (hcy), folic acid and vitamin B12 levels and MTHFR (C677T, A1298C) polymorphisms and treatment options were compared in 70 Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients who taking levodopa (n=26), dopamine agonist (n=11) and levodopa and entacapone treatment together (n=33) with 100 controls. Results Although no statistically significant difference was detected, hcy level of the patients was found higher compared to control group (patient 18.29 ± 9.22 µmol /l vs control 15.77 ± 7.58 µmol / l) and hcy level was highest in the patients receiving only levodopa (19.56 ± 10.77 µmol / l). The frequency of TT genotype in the patients was higher compared to the control group (11.4%, 6%). Especially, hcy level for levodopa-receiving patients with 677TT genotype became significantly higher level when compared with other genotypes of levodopareceiving patients (respectively 677TT 36.28 ± 16.17, 677CT 13.5 ± 1.71, 677CC 17.2 ± 6.59). No statistically significant difference was detected between patients and controls regarding their folic acid and vitamin B12 levels and A1298C polymorphism. Conclusion Finally, both 677TT genotype and levodopa treatment might be jointly contributed to the increasing of the plasma hcy levels in PD patients and entacapone limitedly decreased hcy levels during levodopa treatment. It can be said that results need to be supported with larger sample sized comprehensive studies.

Objectives: This study was performed to investigate prognostic factors status at smaller tumors in patients with stageIB1 cervical cancer (CC) who underwent modified radical or radical hysterectomy.Matherial and metods: Data from patients diagnosed with CC between January 1995 and January 2017 at the GynecologicalOncology Department, Tepecik Training and Research Hospital and Bakirkoy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital,Istanbul, Turkey, were investigated. A total of 182 stage IB1 CC cases were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Patients were divided into two groups according to tumor size (< 2 cm and ≥ 2 cm). There were no complicationsassociated with the operation in patients with a tumor size < 2 cm. Among patients with a tumor size ≥ 2 cm, however, 0.9% (n = 1) developed bladder laceration, 0.9% (n = 1) rectum laceration, and 0.9% (n = 1) pulmonary emboli (P = 0.583). The rates of intermediate risk factors (depth of stromal invasion and lymphovascular space invasion) were significantly higher and lymph node involvement significantly more frequent in patients with a tumor size ≥ 2 cm. However, there were no significant differences in parametrial invasion or vaginal margin involvement between the two groups. Conclusions: Intermediate risk factors and lymph node metastasis were significantly less frequent in patients with smalltumors measuring < 2 cm. However, although parametrial involvement and vaginal margin involvement were less common in patients with small tumors compared with large tumors (≥ 2 cm), the differences were not significant
